La Befana - 12/17/10
For Connie:
Come here children, come listen to me
I have an old story Passed down from our family
There was an old woman with a big red nose
A hunch on her back, and patches on her clothes
Legend does tell us twelve days after Christmas
3 wise men sought to give gifts to the baby Jesus
La Befana was asked if she would like to come,
But she declined stating she had housework that needed to be done
So the 3 wise men left without another word
Leaving La Befana alone to her work
Feeling so guilty deep down inside
She ran after the men after changing her mind
Come back, come back, she cried out with a plea
I’d like to go and share my offerings
So because she hadn’t had the chance
To give her gifts to the Lord’s parents
She comes every January 5th for you
Opening windows with her long, wooden broom
In search to give offerings for the baby Jesus
She leaves you three gifts and prays that you see this
As a blessing for when you are good
And makes it quite understood,
that if you are bad
no gifts for you will be had.
So heed this warning so crystal, so clear,
That you must be good each day of the year
For La Befana to come over that night,
With good tidings and good fortune, and not a bad fright.
She is the Christmas witch, as you now know
So behave, and off to bed you must go.
Come here children, come listen to me
